OUR FRENCH WINES
The wines of Bourgogne are categorised and classified slightly differently than the wines of Australia. Instead of being identified by what variety it is made of such as Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, the wine is given the name of the region, area or vineyard where it was grown. This the called the wine’s appellation, a delineated and protected wine-producing area. These appellations form a hierarchy based on the quality of the vineyard sites. Each of the four levels of Bourgogne’s legendary Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée (AOCs) is represented in the Marchand & Burch French Collection.
The regional level is the most generic of the appellations and these wines can come from anywhere in Burgundy. At the regional level, we have the approachable and appealing Marchand & Burch Bourgogne Pinot Noir. The next step in the hierarchy is that of the village appellation. These wines come from one village or commune such as Chablis or Gevery-Chambertin. These wines make up a large portion of the Marchand and Burch French Collection, offering endless insight into the easy enjoyment and intriguing complexity of Bourgogne, yet the Marchand & Burch Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin are always standouts.
At the pinnacle of the Bourgogne classification system are the single vineyard appellations: Premier Cru and Grand Cru. These are composed of the best vineyards in Bourgogne that have consistently made high-quality wines for many centuries. There are more than 600 Premier Crus spread across Chablis, the Côte-d’Or and the Côte Chalonnaise, altogether making up roughly a tenth of the region’s total production. As for the Premier Cru, there are seven featured in the range, one Chardonnay and six Pinot Noir.
Finally, the top of the appellation system is reserved for the Grand Cru vineyards, which account for little more than 1 per cent of the total production. There are only 33 Grand Cru vineyards in all of the Côte-d’Or. As for Marchand & Burch, there is only one Grand Cru in the collection, the Marchand & Burch Clos de la Roche, whose endless complexity and unrivalled grandeur class it in a league of its own.
