Origin

The pinnacle of Bourgogne’s appellation system is reserved for the Grand Cru vineyards, accounting for little more than 1% of the region’s total production. The supremely high quality of the fruit from these highly esteemed vineyards coupled with the consistent character of the resulting wines have earned them the enormous honour of Grand Cru classification. There are only 33 Grand Crus in the Côte d’Or and one in Chablis. These Grand Cru wines carry an entirely independent appellation with only the name of the climat or vineyard appearing on the label such as Chambertin or Corton. The term Grand Cru must also appear on the label.

About Marchand & Burch Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Clos de la Roche stands as one of Bourgogne’s most revered vineyards, renowned for producing some of the region’s most captivating and highly prized wines. True to its name, which means “rock” in French, large stones cover the vineyard’s surface, with a rocky subsoil beneath. These challenging conditions force vine roots to penetrate deeply, resulting in fruit with remarkable concentration and character.

Dominating the mid-slopes of the Côte d’Or, just north of Morey-Saint-Denis, the vineyard stretches from Clos Saint-Denis to the boundary with Gevrey-Chambertin. Here, the soil layer is only 30 cm deep, supported by substantial blocks of nutrient-rich brown limestone, with a high marlstone content—credited for the wine’s impressive structure and aging potential.

Clos de la Roche wines are dynamic, evolving over decades from vibrant, fruit-forward powerhouses with exotic spice into refined, mineral-driven expressions of elegance and complexity. These wines are treasures of French winemaking, crafted to be admired and cherished over time.

Tasting Note

A vibrant interplay of wild strawberries and sour red cherries fills the palate with jubilant energy, while smooth, supportive tannins extend the finish almost beyond the limits of sensory perception. With a kaleidoscope of complex terroir notes hidden beneath its rush of primary fruit power, the true excitement lies not in tasting the young wine, but in dreaming of the grandeur of its ultimate mature expression and appreciating the privilege of witnessing this magisterial terroir.
