Origin

When developing the Australian Collection, Pascal and Jeff meticulously explored the diverse topography of Western Australia in search of the perfect site to cultivate exceptional Pinot Noir that truly reflects their unique terroir. It became evident that the Great Southern region was the optimal choice for cool climate viticulture capable of delivering the desired quality. Among the potential locations, Mount Barker stood out as the coldest site available, with its challenging soil types resulting in low yields but superior quality grapes. While canopy management posed no significant issues, the region’s high-risk nature required the fruit to hang on the vines until the very end of the ripening season. Nonetheless, Pascal and Jeff deemed this a worthwhile risk, confident in the superior quality it would produce.

Establishing the Mount Barrow vineyard in 2005, Jeff and Pascal embarked on a journey with little foresight of its future acclaim. They identified Mount Barrow as the quintessential location for growing terroir-driven Australian Pinot Noir, yet it took years of patience and dedication before the vines matured enough to produce exceptional wine. Today, nearly two decades later, Jeff and Pascal are immensely proud of the Pinot Noir from this esteemed vineyard. The wine embodies the resilience and character of Mount Barrow, showcasing the remarkable potential that comes from embracing challenging terroirs and unwavering commitment to quality.

About Marchand & Burch Australian VILLAGE PINOT NOIR

The Mount Barrow vineyard is renowned for possessing the most extensive array of Pinot Noir clones in Western Australia, including three that have been directly imported from Burgundy. These French clones are a valuable gift from the old world, providing a strong foundation for creating wines with remarkable nuance and depth. This wide range of clones significantly enhances the character of Marchand & Burch Pinot Noirs. As Jeff notes, “Having this diversity of clones adds significant complexity to the wine.” For our Mount Barrow Pinot Noir, Burgundy clones 114 and 115 from specific blocks are predominantly used.

In contrast to the Village Pinot Noir, the Mount Barrow Pinot Noir offers a more intense and concentrated style. Crafted from older vines situated higher up the hill and slightly to the east, these vines benefit from a southeast-facing orientation that protects them from the coldest airflows. This results in a Pinot Noir that combines intensity and concentration with a delicate, lingering, and well-balanced finish, showcasing the exceptional quality achievable in this high-risk region.

Tasting Note

Bright, translucent ruby in the glass, the elegant and energetic Village Pinot Noir shines due to elevated floral and red fruited notes. Savoury earth and spice tones mingle with red cherry, raspberry, rosemary, hibiscus, vanilla, and potpourri on the nose. Soft, silky tannins gather towards the front of the palate giving way to a smooth texture and rich fruited mid-palate. A lively, lingering acidity points to this wine’s cool climate origin. Impressions of red berries and floral tones remain on the palate forming a pleasant and dry finish.
