Origin

The Marchand & Burch Australian Collection Chardonnays were created to mirror the famed white wines of Bourgogne. The goal was to create elegant and poised wines with balanced oak integration and fine acidity at their core. When they first started Marchand & Burch Wines, Jeff and Pascal set out to craft Chardonnays that possess power, length, and palate weight as well as a long, lingering finish. They sought a certain, distinctive nose that would set these wines apart from other Australian examples. A bit of reductiveness was desirable as it would give the wines longevity. While the Mount Barker Chardonnay was originally crafted to reflect Chassagne Montrachet, the Villages Chardonnay was created in the style of Chablis.

About Marchand & Burch Australian MOUNT BARKER CHARDONNAY

Marchand and Burch Chardonnay was born from Jeff Burch and Pascal Marchand’s vision to craft a wine of depth and character by blending Burgundy’s traditional methods with the unique qualities of New World terroir. Pascal identified the remote Great Southern region as the ideal location, where its emerging vineyards held the potential to fully express this concept. For over 15 years, our winemakers have embraced this philosophy, resulting in a remarkable collection of wines.

The Marchand & Burch Mount Barker Chardonnay is a wine that bears the distinct imprint of the site on which it was grown. Pure, poised, and elegant, it is the epitome of cool climate Chardonnay. Sourced from vines at the summit of the Mount Barrow vineyard, at an elevation of 380 meters above sea level, this white wine is crafted from the original Chardonnay plantings which have now entered their second decade. The parcel forms a mosaic of prized French clones, as well as the revered Gin Gin clone, first planted in Western Australia over 50 years ago. The fruit, exhibiting both presence and depth, undergoes roughly nine months of maturation in carefully selected new French oak. This delicate interplay of pristine fruit and judicious oak enriches the wine’s structure and cellaring potential while highlighting the pure varietal character and championing the site’s unique terroir. A realization of Jeff Burch’s enduring dream, this wine has garnered much admiration over the years from both fine wine enthusiasts and esteemed critics.

Tasting Note

Sea spray, orange blossom, lime zest, white nectarine, and green apple coalesce forming a lifted and nuanced nose. Gunsmoke and flint mix with hints of almond and vanilla pod adding layers to the intricate bouquet. The palate is characterized by a taut citrus acidity that drives this lithe wine while flavours of soft stone fruit and lemon curd add depth and weight. Now firmly in the fresh and enjoyable phase of its development, this wine will only continue to build complexity and depth of flavour as it ages.
