“Style wise the wines elegant, the wines are charming, forward and quite silky, with a lovely display of terroir and appellation. In other words wines with a lovely display of fruit – and a lovely drinkability. They are wines of true enjoyment – although the intensity increases as the quality blossom. They are both significant and substantial when you reach a certain level.” Steen Ohman, Winehog, on the 2017 vintage wines from Pascal Marchand

“The 2017s are unquestionably fresh. Acidities are normal, with pH levels of 3.30 to 3.50, so they feel lively and tensile, as great Pinot Noir should…The 2017 reds have a lot of charm, will give a lot of pleasure and will surprise many with their longevity.” Neal Martin, Vinous, on the 2017 Burgundy vintage

“…without fail, virtually every wine that I show hits the pleasure mark, the infusion driven vinification style and the undeniable clarity/purity afforded by their work ethic resonates universally as “this is Burgundian beauty”Robert Panzer, Down to Earth Wines, on Pascal Marchand’s style

Marchand & Burch Burgundies

2017 Vintage – Marchand & Burch Burgundy new releases – First Shipment

Bourgogne Rouge

The style of our Bourgogne Rouge has been evolving towards emphasis on beautiful pure fruit and silky mouthfeel without the undue influence of Oak.  The 2017 vintage is the perfect vehicle for this type of expression.  This is entry level Burgundy as it should be offering immediate satisfaction while conveying the essence of Pinot Noir.  The fruit is from various vineyards in the Cote d’Or.

Côtes de Nuits – Villages

A striking perfume, balance and depth are the hallmarks of this Côte de Nuits – Villages.  Fruit for this appellation can come from any of the 15 villages in the Côte, for this wine the vineyards are all located in Corgoloin, the southernmost village just below Nuits-Saint –Georges.  Richer soils give intensity to the fruit and the addition of whole bunches to the ferment heightens the aromatics and overall complexity.  This is a real sweet spot wine and decidedly moreish.

Marsannay

The Marsannay Appellation is right at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits.  The wine is a combination of two vineyards, one of which is steeply elevated and regarded as one of the finest in the village.  Elegance, finesse and structure are the hallmarks of this wine.  It’s presence in the glass grows with aeration indicating further complexity will evolve with some cellaring.

Savigny Les Beaune Les Lavières Premier Cru

This charming village nestles into the hillsides Northwest of Beaune.  Pascal has owned this vineyard since 2014 and applies biodynamic practices to the mature vines, some up to 65 years old.  The name Les Lavières usually relates to the vineyard being an old quarry for “Laves” which are flat stones used in Burgundy to tile rooves and build vineyard walls.  In this case the vineyard was originally an ancient graveyard and the tombstones were covered with Laves.  This wine has phenomenal energy and presence in its fruit and beguiling aromatics.  It represents excellent value for a Premier Cru and will repay cellaring although it is delightful now as well.

Volnay Fremiets Premier Cru

Fremiets is another vineyard plot owned by Pascal since 2014 and farmed biodynamically.  Volnay is renowned for the quality of its Premier Crus and Pascal cut his teeth here with his first winemaking role at Comte Armand in the village of Pommard which lies immediately north of Fremiets.  Vine age is 30-35 years.

“In the nose dark and red fruit – lovely energy here. On the palate also vivid and forward … a quite tremendous airyness.'” Steen Ohman, Winehog.

This wine will evolve over a decade in the cellar.

2018 Morgon – Cru Beaujolais

It’s not unusual for Burgundy producers to head south into Beaujolais and explore the potential of the wonderful Gamay vineyards planted there.  Gamay offers a different flavour profile to Pinot Noir, with some darker fruit characters and additional richness.  In the appellation of Morgon, one of the 10 Crus of Beaujolais where the finest wines are produced, signature elements of exotic spice and smoky earth complement the dense cherry and plum characters.  Our Morgon is matured in concrete to allow the distinctive characters to stand forth without the influence of Oak.  It is a wonderful complement and point of difference to our Pinot offering as well as a highly enjoyable wine in its own right.
