The French Collection of wines from Burgundy is a realisation of the ambition of Jeff and Pascal to collaborate in a meaningful way to bring wines from the great vineyards of the Côte d’Or and beyond to Australia. Since the first vintages from 2007 were released the range has expanded as Pascal’s own holdings of vines in Burgundy have increased. He now owns 8ha of Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru appellations, as well as continuing to source fruit from a trusted network of family growers. We are pleased to offer a lively Crémant de Bourgogne sparkling along with our range of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. All our wines are sealed under screwcap, and we were among the first producers in Burgundy to seal a Grand Cru wine with this ever reliable closure.
To further understand the way the vineyards of Burgundy are classified we recommend this article on the official Burgundy website

The heart of the Australian collection is the estate Mount Barrow Vineyard, planted by the Burch Family in 2005 and much admired by Pascal Marchand on his visit to Western Australia the following year. The vineyard faces south to the formidable Southern Ocean, its unique microclimate meets an ancient geology where gravel and granite combine to test the resilience of the maturing vines. It is this struggle which gives expression and character in the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that speak solely of this environment and nowhere else.
The Australian collection now comprises five wines: The Villages wines are exuberant, varietal and ready to drink. The Villages Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are crafted from the younger vines at the bottom of the Mount Barrow vineyard and are matured in tanks and larger format old oak barrels to emphasis vibrancy and fruit freshness. The Villages Rosé is a homage to the Provençal style and uses old vine Grenache and Shiraz to convey the delicate, alluring, spicy and mineral characters which makes these wines so unashamedly enjoyable.
At the top of vineyard, which rises to 380 metres above sea level, the original plantings of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are maturing into their second decade, and comprise a selection of prized French clones along with the revered Gin Gin clone of Chardonnay which has been planted in Western Australia for over fifty years. These vines give rise to the two wines that express the aspiration and achievement of the Australian Collection, the Mount Barrow Pinot Noir and Mount Barker Chardonnay. Fruit of great presence and depth can handle some carefully selected new French oak to enhance structure and cellaring potential, without masking the varietal character or the voice of the terroir. These two wines represent the ongoing dream of Jeff Burch to unlock the full potential of the Great Southern and have been appreciated in their evolution by lovers of fine wine and esteemed critics over the last decade.

Burgundy – or “Bourgogne” to the French – is like a foundation stone to the world of fine wine, producing inimitable examples of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, varieties born of (and inseparable from) its historic wine landscape. It is the birthplace of the unique and abiding concept of terroir; the notion that fine wine can bear the distinctive imprint of its originating place, with the winemaker a conduit for the careful translation of soil, season and vine into an authentic sensory experience in the glass.
The region itself occupies a compact strip of Eastern France where favourable areas, characterised by limestone soils, are completely covered with vines – their dominance yielding only to a network of small, ancient villages which carry some of the most famous names in the world of wine. The climate is continental and highly variable with a relatively short summer. Vineyards are vulnerable to frost and hail and vignerons are constantly challenged by the vagaries of nature when growing and ripening their fruit.
The heart of Burgundy is the Côte d’Or; this “golden slope” of prized land is only two kilometres wide and stretches 40 kilometres from Dijon in the North to the River Dheune in the South. Its mosaic of vineyards has been completely classified into a hierarchy of quality over centuries by monks, farmers, family Domaines and Negociant wine producers. All the Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines of Marchand and Burch are from vineyards within its limits, and particularly the northern section, the Côte de Nuits, which is dominated by plantings of Pinot Noir.
The Great Southern is Australia’s largest delineated wine region by area, stretching nearly 200 kilometres both north-to-south and east-to-west along the isolated south coast of Western Australia. Only a very small portion of this larger area is under vine, the remainder being occupied by forest or farmland unsuitable for viticulture. To bring some vinous focus to its vast remoteness, the five main wine producing areas have been officially classified into subregions.
The Mount Barker and Porongurup subregions are of primary importance for Marchand and Burch’s production of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These two adjacent areas lie 40 kilometres north of the Southern Ocean, with a cool maritime climate strongly influenced by the inland movement of cold ocean air. This moderates the temperature during the growing season, allowing for longer ripening and the development of complex flavour profiles, which then translate from grape to wine.
The vineyards in both these subregions lie above some of the world's oldest recorded geology, and imposing granite outcrops are a signature feature. With very little soil disturbance or erosion over many centuries even the soil material itself is highly distinctive. This striking contrast with Burgundy was particularly meaningful and exciting for Pascal Marchand and he convinced Jeff to focus their collaborative energy on these vineyards in the pursuit of an ultimate expression of “new world” terroir.
