Origin
Within Bourgogne’s structured classification, village or commune appellations represent the next level above regional wines, providing access to some of the region’s best value Pinot Noirs. There are 43 village appellations in total, comprising about one-third of Bourgogne’s wine production. On labels, these wines are typically marked by the commune’s name, such as ‘Chablis’ or ‘Gevrey-Chambertin.’ Some village appellations, like ‘Côte de Nuits-Village,’ may span multiple villages within the Côte de Nuits area, offering a broader geographic expression. If the wine is produced solely from a single vineyard outside the Premier Cru or Grand Cru classifications, the vineyard’s name may also appear alongside the village designation.
