Did you know that each of the four levels of Bourgogne’s legendary Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée (AOCs) are represented in the Marchand & Burch French Collection?

At the regional level, we have the approachable and appealing Marchand & Burch Bourgogne Pinot Noir. At the village level, we have quite a few options, yet the Marchand & Burch Vosne-Romanée is always a stand out. As for the Premier Cru, there are six featured in the range, however, the elegance and opulence of the Marchand & Burch Morey-Saint-Denis Les Genavrieres truly sets it apart. Finally, for the Grand Cru, there is only one, the Marchand & Burch Clos de la Roche, whose endless complexity and unrivaled grandeur classes it in a league of its own.

Discover the many different levels of complexity, sophistication and indulgence that this region has to offer with the Marchand & Burch French Collection. Follow the link in bio to purchase directly from our website.

Join us today in raising a glass to the irresistible and captivating grape, Pinot Noir. This remarkable variety not only crafts an elegant, layered and effortlessly enjoyable red wine but it can also transform into a fresh and flavourful rosé or exquisite méthode traditionnelle. Whether you prefer to revel in the exuberance and allure of a peony pink rosé or indulge the soft red fruit and savoury nuances of a medium bodied red, this grape is your perfect match.

Originating from the renowned French wine region of Bourgogne, Pinot Noir has discovered a blissful haven in the wild and scenic Great Southern region of Western Australia. It's here that we meticulously nurture and cultivate the very vines that make our Marchand & Burch Villages and Mount Barrow Pinot Noir.

Whichever wine you choose to enjoy today, be sure to fill your glass with a Pinot Noir and toast to this extraordinary grape! Cheers!

Have you ever wondered why the vines in Bourgogne appear so much smaller and closer together when compared to Australian vineyards?

No, it is not an optical illusion, but rather it is by design. Vines are like weeds, left unattended they would grow like crazy and the fruit they would bear would be not worthy for wine. In order to get the absolute best out of the vines, you must control their vigour in order to ensure each berry is packed with the utmost flavour, aroma, colour and tannin.

One way of controlling vigour is planting the vines closer together. In Bourgogne, most of the vines are planted 1m apart, a width that was originally determined by the width of a horse, the favoured labour-saving mechanism of the time. As a point of comparison, in Australia, vines are often planted at a width of 3 m. This, on the other hand, was based on width of commercial vineyard tractors.

The way these vineyards took shape half a world away came down to the manner in which the vines were tended at the time. Decades later, this subtle difference has an immense and immeasurable impact on the wines as we know them today.

Our Marchand & Burch Villages Chardonnay is a mainstay of our Australian Collection, offering vibrance, poise and polish all the while remaining approachable and easy to drink. Halliday Tasting Team Member, Jane Faulkner, agrees, adorning this delightful wine with an impressive 94 points.

She writes, 'There’s the texture, the refreshing acidity and the citrusy flavours that combine to make this a very appealing drink. Lemon and limes with splashes of grapefruit juice, a dusting of ginger spice and vanilla pod oak. A more restrained style this vintage and all the better for it.'

While there is still some stock available at the winery, this Chardonnay is selling fast. Head to our website or select retailers to stock your cellar before it is too late.

Meet the brilliant winemakers behind the Marchand & Burch Australian Collection: Nic Bowen, Mark Bailey and Giacomo Polvara. In this photo, they are deeply engrossed in a barrel-by-barrel tasting of our Pinot Noirs, a necessary prelude to the blending process. It is by tasting each barrel that they decide the assembly of the final blend, a task that requires great expertise and artistry.

Crafting the perfect blend is akin to composing a symphony of flavors, where each distinct barrel becomes a unique note, harmoniously converging into a masterpiece greater than its individual parts. The anticipation is palpable as we await the debut of their latest creations.

One week ago today, the 2024 Halliday Wine Companion was released and we are thrilled to announce that our Australian collection has earned fabulous scores across the board. With one wine awarded 95 points, one receiving 94 points and another garnering 93 points, we are absolutely delighted by these remarkable results!

2022 Marchand & Burch Rosé, 95 points
2022 Marchand & Burch Villages Chardonnay, 94 points
2022 Marchand & Burch Mount Barrow Pinot Noir, 93 points

These wines are victims of their own success in that all but the 2022 Villages Chardonnay are sold out at our winery. However, you may still be able to find them at select retailers.

It has been an incredible lead-up to the 2023 vintage in Bourgogne despite a few passing hailstorms, the most recent of which produced hail the size of golf balls! Luckily there was little to no damage to the grapes or vines.

This growing season, the Côte d’Or has managed to skirt any flirtations with frost as well as dodge heavy-handed hail. A slow and steady start to summer had some speculating that the 2023 harvest would not begin until mid-September, a relatively late start compared to recent years. However, the speed of growth of the vines paired with good weather conditions seem to suggest harvest could begin as early as the end of August. The good news is that the yields appear excellent for both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with some clusters already beginning their transition toward veraison, which should be in full swing in the next week or two.

The wines of Marsannay are known and loved for their stylish, fresh-fruited nature with a soft, supple texture that makes them particularly well-suited to enjoy as a young wine. This is certainly the case when it comes to the 2020 Marchand & Burch Marsannay.

Appealing and approachable from the moment its cherry and bramble-filled bouquet rises from the glass all the way through to its chalky, yet fine tannin finish. A wine of finesse, its bright fruited profile and gently extracted freshness gain depth from savoury undercurrents of forest floor, tar, toast, beetroot, and peat. The mid-palate is plush, resplendent with flavours of ripe strawberry, anise seed and sassafras.

Some of those with a keen eye for detail may have noticed a slight shift in our communications of late. We have begun referring to the region of Burgundy by its true, French name: Bourgogne.

Did you know that Bourgogne is the only French wine region whose name is translated into different languages? The name is translated to “Burgundy” in English, “Burgund” in German, and “Borgogna” in Italian to name a few. However, it is ‘Bourgogne’ that appears on every label of wine from the region so to dispel any confusion and honour this area’s native name, we have decided to use the French spelling from now on.

June was cooler than usual this year meaning that we could start pruning earlier at the Mount Barrow vineyard this winter. With a vast majority of the vineyard already pruned, we are now shifting our focus to the Chardonnay blocks, setting up our beautiful Chardonnay vines for a fruitful growing season to come. As Chardonnay is one of the first varieties to start budburst each spring, we prune it last to ensure it does not go into budburst prematurely and risk damage by cold snaps or frost.

One of the many pleasures of the world of wine is the endless possibilities of food pairings. There is no better way to elevate your wine experience than pairing it with the perfect dish.

For our Marchand & Burch Villages and Mount Barrow Pinot Noir, we recommend matching with baked porcini mushrooms on a fontina cheese risotto. For our Marchand & Burch Villages Chardonnay, we suggest enjoying it paired with misoyaki ocean trout with yuzu, truffle and fermented ginger.

Bear in mind these are merely recommendations and there are infinite options when it comes to pairing food to these elegant and complex wines. What are some of your favourite food pairings for Marchand & Burch wines?

Ever wondered where the name ‘Villages’ in our Marchand & Burch Villages Chardonnay and Villages Pinot Noir comes from?

This is a subtle nod to our connection to the fine wines of Bourgogne and refers to the region’s classification system. The wines of Bourgogne are classified into Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée (AOCs), of which there are 4 different levels of quality: regional (i.e. Bourgogne Pinot Noir), village (i.e. Nuits-Saint-Georges), Premier Cru (i.e. Savigny-Les-Beaune Les Vergelesses Premier Cru), and Grand Cru (i.e. Clos de la Roche Grand Cru).

In Bourgogne, the village wines sit at a happy medium in terms of both quality and price, making them a great way to explore the wines of the region without the hefty price tag. In this way, they serve as the perfect counterpart to our Marchand & Burch Villages Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which are youthful, approachable expressions of our Mount Barrow vineyard.

‘I don’t look at 2020 as a hot year, rather one that started a bit earlier’ states winemaker, Mark Fincham, who helps Pascal Marchand make our wines in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Although the temperature throughout the 2020 season sat well above average, there were not the extreme heat waves of previous years. The precocity of the 2020 vintage was instead due to the combination of a very mild winter followed by a warm growing season free from any cool periods to decelerate ripening.

The trick in 2020 was to pick the grapes at the precise moment when tannin, acidity, sugar and phenolic ripeness harmonised perfectly. By opting to pick on the earlier side, Pascal was able to retain a liveliness that forms the backbone of the 2020 wines, counterbalancing the richer, riper strokes. While the Chardonnays of 2020 are taut, boasting structure, and aromatic purity, the Pinot Noirs are tantalising and beguiling, combining fruit maturity with bright acidity.

The 2020 Marchand & Burch French Collection has arrived and we are so looking forward to sharing these sensational wines with you.

2020 was an especially unique vintage in Burgundy. Not only was it one of the earliest harvests on record, with some producers beginning to pick in mid-August, but it was also the first harvest in which producers had to navigate the ever-evolving restriction of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these distinct challenges, the wines possess a vivacious freshness, fruit purity, and profound concentration promising both for long-term development and immediate enjoyment.

According to Pascal Marchand, the elusive concept of terroir comes down to two simple things: a piece of land and mankind. It is the synergy between these two entities. It is about finding the precise right thing to do on a particular patch of earth in order to fully reveal its potential. In that way, there is a duality at the heart of terroir. On the physical end, you have things like soil, climate, and aspect, but equally as important is the human side as the interpreter of that land.
